American Speedway is a top-view racing arcade game released by Enerdyne Technologies in 1987. American Speedway is a top-down fixed-screen racing game for one or two players simultaneously. The dedicated standing cabinet has either one or two steering wheels, and both players using the same screen. The game could however also be installed in a number of other cabinet types. Races consist of qualifying or competition rounds. In a qualifying round five laps need to be completed in 60 seconds, regardless of the position of the other racers. In the competition rounds five laps need to be finished as well, but the player needs to finish either in first place (5,000 points) or second place (2,500 points) to advance. The player steers the car around the track where there are three other racers as well. It is possible to hinder each other and there are obstacles and oils spills that cause the car to slip. To win a top speed is required and that is only possible by not crashing all the time. Even though there is no damage, it takes a long time to build up speed again after slowing down. Tracks contains optional awards that can be picked up such as bonus points, a speed bonus or a traction bonus. The number of laps is shown near the top of the screen for each player. There are different The game keeps track of high scores.
